THE ONLY CANDIDATE FOR ASSESSOR WITH EXPERIENCE DOING THE JOB.
Al Dams, is now, and has been for 11 years, the Chief Deputy Assessor, the number two position in the office. Al Dams is a respected senior leader and public servant with more than 30 years of experience serving King County. Over the course of his career, Al has held leadership roles in Assessments, Parks, Executive Services, and Public Works. He understands how county government actually works — not just at a policy level, but at the operational and technical level where decisions directly affect residents, taxing districts, and public trust.
The Assessor’s job is deeply technical. It requires real expertise in mass appraisal systems, data management, GIS, valuation modeling, and the oversight of complex IT and analytics infrastructure. It also demands the ability to manage large teams of appraisers, analysts, and technologists; to ensure assessments are legally defensible during appeals; and to maintain rigorous standards for data quality, equity, and accuracy across hundreds of thousands of parcels. These are not abstract skills — they are essential to keeping our property tax system fair, stable, and credible.
Al is married and the father of five children. Outside of work, he enjoys playing guitar and long-distance running.
